Final Project Ideas N8-n-Kelly

Page history last edited by N8 14 years, 4 months ago

N8: I am still unsure of a topic for the Final Project. I do like Kelly's piece about tattoos, because I can relate and I love tattoos. I don't know if I wanna take that as a project though. I do like the style that Dylan and David brought to the table in our Gaming Culture class, and I would possibly like to write a paper in that form.

I liked how they each took on a paragraph or two at first and then essentially ended up finishing eachothers sentences. I think this is a really great way to grab your audience and hold their attention.

Kelly: Possibly writing about Obama and his Nobel Piece Prize (not a research paper, though) something fun.

N8: Maybe a narrative based around Obama winning the award, possibly becoming Obama and giving his point of view.

David and Dylan's Paper.   <---- This links you to their Final Paper but you should read the rough draft version which is on the same page to really see their process.

So I have done a little bit of surfing the web, which is absolutely my favorite thing to do.  However I wanted to look at what other cultures thought of tattooing, my thought is anyone who is against it and (that is their own opinion) which they are allowed to have, but tattooing goes back at least 10,000 years which is amazing.

So there is a group called the Mafiosi which is part of the Japanese culture.  They are known for tattooing mythological characters on their body.  Once they have put this design on their body it is a sign on initiation into the mafia.  The designs and art work can take up to two years to finish and are admired for their colors and patterns.  Which is outstanding, since most people in our civilization usually have a stereotype towards an individual  who has tattoos on their body, especially a tattoo that would take two years, I’m sure that person would not be receiving employee of the month or a CEO position.  Tattooing is an art that is only appreciated by few.  Tattoo are a way to express your feelings and position in life.

Here is a video Kelly found that has some pretty crazy tattoos in it!

To me getting a tattoo is not only a form of self expression but also a work of art!!!! To me there is a process of getting a tattoo. I go through the process in my own way which I believe everyone does it in their own way. I start out by first conteplating what I want to get. Then, I try and figure out how big I want it and if I want it in color or black and gray. Then I try to decide where on my body I would like to put it. I see the body as a blank canvas. There are so many different spaces on your body to put tattoos. The tattoo artist in my eyes is just that the artist. After the long thought and decision making process I make an appointment and go get my tattoo. The feeling of getting a tattoo is an envigorating feeling to me. The pain to me is such a release. When I am very stressed out or in a bad mood I wish I could get a tattoo because it is such a release. Some people say tattoos hurt really bad, but I look at it this way: I could sit through 5 hours of pain to have a piece of art on my body for the rest of my life.

Tattoos also give you character. I personally have seven tattoos and I think that they in a way express me. Every tattoo I have has some sort of meaning and I feel the meaning behind the tattoo is what really makes it more meaningful. I mean think about it, is it possible that Monet, Da Vinci, or Dali created a painting or piece of art without any meaning behind the creation?

The thing about tattoos is that they are very addicting they are almost like a drug......

They also work in two different ways you either get one and you love it, or you get one and you hated the experience and will never get another again.

Adding on to Nate's scripture, tattoos are the most addicting form of art.  I believe that people cannot just have one, if a person tells themselves that one is enough they are lying.  My own parents don't understand what the meaning behind a tatoo is.  A tattoo used to be permanet on the body, now an individual can get one and have it removed 5 years later if they decide that they don't like it.  A tattoo is a form of art work,  I decided to go around and ask some friends what they believe a tattoo is or represents and almost 80% of the responses were a form of art to express yourself.  I think whether you post it on a piece of paper or your body tattoos are an expression.  The video I found above is a bit extreme, however, each individual in it is expressing themselves in interesting ways!

I think that expressing yourself is the key to getting a tattoo. Every artisit is expressing him or herself in their own work of art. Some that does tattoos is called a tattoo artist for a reason they are an artist! Some people may pull their art out of a book or a picture on the way, others, like myself like to come in with an idea and see where the artsit takes it. In a sense a tattoo if created with your idea and the artists intepretation is a convergent form of expression between you and the artist. One of my tattoos was my idea the concept and what it was but the colors are completely the artist : Ryan Cullen's idea. He is the artist that has done most of my work. I had an artist that did shitty work on me before and Ryan had to fix his work. The above tattoo of the camera is done by Ryan also.

This picture shows how samoans apply tattoos, a very ancient process and one of the origins of modern tatooing.

Tattoos have been around for over 2500 years.

Here is a video on polynesian tattoos, and how they are done, like in the pictures above. I love some of the art that is done and how heavy and dark the ink is....

Article on tattooing

What I have been starting to read about tattoos is where the idea has come about.  I know that tribes and other ancient societies have used the to identify themselves, however, how did it become so diverse in main stream society.  Some of the articles I have read start with the idea that celebrities started to ink their bodies and a simple broadcast on MTV turned it in to something cool.  Basically some are saying that tattoos are sold through the media, which is why people are following the trend.  I wonder if that is really the case.  Are people not defining themselves but defining themselves through others?

I personally got my first tattoo when I was 14, and did it in a remembrance of a friend, but tattoos were popular I suppose, sad enough I cannot remember that long ago.  Obviously I got the word from somewhere else and I followed in that group I guess.

I began to look into the psychological aspect of tattooing and most articles described it as the media makes it cool to get a tattoo and that it is not so much a sign of independence but a fashion statement.  As much as it sound that it is correct, I just don’t see people getting tattoos because everyone else is doing it.  There also has to be a pain tolerance to receive the repetition of a tattoo pen digging into your skin.  Whether or not it is a fashion statement, I don’t agree that the public has such a large influence on the art of tattooing.

Not saying this is "right" but I think you two are poised to respond to and work with some of the unfinished business and implied claims in this blog.
